Consumers expect mobile capabilities

The rise of mobile technology is something that no company can afford to ignore, especially as Australian consumers increasingly demand these capabilities.

Whether they are choosing card printing technology or are looking for new ways to manage their day to day lives, mobile services have never been so important.

A recent report from Deloitte Access Economics found that smartphone technology in particular has gathered pace, as people now expect greater functionality from their mobile devices. The survey, commissioned by the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA), found that back in 2012, just 9.5 per cent of people in this country had made a purchase using their handset. By the following year, this had increased to 19 per cent.

“With more than 31 million active mobile subscriptions in the Australian market and world-leading mobile networks, consumers are using ever-expanding opportunities provided by smartphones to change long-standing habits across many sectors of the economy and society,” said AMTA CEO Chris Althaus.

This isn’t the only study to have outlined Australians’ love of all things mobile. The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) revealed last year that companies adopting mobile technology have the potential to stand apart from the crowd, while enhancing their bottom line.

Businesses using mobile broadband were shown to have reduced their costs by 1.4 per cent. This is a direct result of improvements in productivity, as well as the time saving benefits that mobile connectivity can bring.

ACMA forecasts that mobile data will grow at an annual rate of around 38 per cent, indicating that more firms look set to make the most of it. As Australians expect to be able to access information and support online, it’s hardly surprising that companies are keen to enable them to do just that.

Gartner statistics seem to agree, as the group predicts that mobile data traffic across the globe will have increased 59 per cent between 2014 and 2015 alone. This trend is expected to continue until 2018.
