Substandard and Non-Genuine MIFARE® Cards Are Appearing in the Australian Market
Our team has been identifying a pattern of poor-quality contactless smart cards in circulation across Australia. Here is what we have found, what it means, and what to do about it.

Over recent weeks, samples of contactless smart cards have come to our attention that represent a significant step below the quality standards the Australian market should expect. These cards are being presented as standard MIFARE® product. On closer examination — visually, physically, and electronically — they are anything but.
This article documents what we have found, explains the technical implications, and provides practical guidance for anyone who procures, issues, or relies on MIFARE® smart card credentials.
What We Found: The Visual Evidence
The first thing that flags a substandard card is often the simplest: how it looks. Genuine MIFARE® cards produced to recognised quality standards present with a consistent, clean white card body and flawless lamination. The cards we have been examining do neither.

Off-Colour Grey Card Stock
Grey card stock of this kind is characteristic of lower-grade or recycled PVC sourced from mixed material streams. Virgin PVC used in quality card manufacture is a controlled, consistent material. Recycled or mixed-source PVC varies in composition and colour — it is cheaper to obtain, and its use is a reliable indicator of a manufacturer operating to the lowest possible cost target. In itself, grey stock does not cause a functional defect. However, it directly affects print accuracy and professional presentation and, more importantly, signals the same cost‑driven manufacturing approach applied to every other part of the card — including antenna construction and chip bonding.
Contamination Under the Laminate
The presence of dust and foreign material trapped within the laminate layers is a direct consequence of inadequate environmental controls during manufacture. Clean-room or controlled-environment production prevents exactly this type of contamination. Its presence tells you the cards were not made in one.

Non-Genuine Chips and Security Risks
Visual inspection flags manufacturing quality problems. Electronic inspection reveals something more serious: whether the chip inside is a genuine NXP MIFARE® product at all.
NXP licenses MIFARE® technology to selected manufacturers under controlled programmes. Licensed manufacturers produce legitimate, functional chips that identify correctly through NXP’s own diagnostic tools. By contrast, counterfeiters design unauthorised chips to mimic genuine NXP products without NXP’s quality controls and without the security features that make genuine MIFARE® chips trustworthy.
- UID duplication — genuine NXP chips carry non-repeating, factory-programmed UIDs. Counterfeit chips frequently ship with duplicated UIDs or writeable UIDs that can be programmed to clone any card in an existing system
- Failed security operations — counterfeit chips may respond to basic read commands but fail on authentication and encryption operations
- No originality verification — MIFARE DESFire® EV3 carries a hardware-backed cryptographic originality signature. Counterfeits cannot replicate this
- Unknown lifespan — a counterfeit chip’s data retention and write endurance are entirely unknown and unguaranteed
Detecting Non-Genuine Cards: NXP TagInfo
NXP’s TagInfo app — free for Android and iOS — allows any NFC-equipped smartphone to interrogate a contactless card and report chip identity, manufacturer details, and for DESFire® EV3, originality signature status. A genuine card, whether from NXP or a licensed manufacturer, will be correctly identified. An unlicensed counterfeit will not.

MIFARE DESFire® EV2 Is No Longer in Production
NXP Semiconductors has moved its DESFire® product line forward to MIFARE DESFire® EV3. The EV2 generation is no longer actively manufactured. Any EV2 cards available in the market today represent residual or aged stock — and in a market where counterfeiting is documented, aged stock of a discontinued product carries a materially higher counterfeit risk.
If you are being offered MIFARE DESFire® EV2 cards — particularly at competitive pricing — treat that offer with caution and verify the chips with TagInfo before accepting any order.

The Antenna Question - What You Cannot See
NXP does not manufacture the antenna. It is designed, sourced, and assembled by the card manufacturer. Their choices about coil geometry, wire specification, and connection method determine read range, reliability, and service life. A manufacturer cutting costs on card substrate and operating without environmental controls is not applying higher standards to the antenna and bonding work.

How to Protect Your Organisation
- Verify with TagInfo before you accept stock. Scan a sample from any new card order. Genuine NXP chips will be correctly identified. Counterfeits will not.
- Specify MIFARE DESFire® EV3 for all new deployments. It is the current NXP platform, actively manufactured, and the only version with hardware-backed originality verification.
- Be cautious of DESFire® EV2 on the market. EV2 is no longer in production. Test any EV2 stock with TagInfo and treat competitive pricing with scepticism.
- Ask for card manufacturer certification. ISO 9001 quality management and ISO/IEC 7810 compliance are baseline expectations for a serious manufacturer.
- Inspect physically before accepting. Off-colour stock, laminate inclusions, or inconsistent card dimensions are grounds for rejection regardless of price.
