
Credentialing decides who gets where at a sporting event. Get it right and operations stay smooth. Get it wrong and access points become bottlenecks at exactly the wrong time.
For events at any serious scale, from AFL finals and the Australian Open through to Olympic and Commonwealth Games, three things have to work at once. The card must be clearly readable at distance. The printer must keep pace with issuance demand. And the credential must hold up across days of heavy use. This article covers how oversized card printers and smart card tracking address all three, and how PPC ID Solutions supports event credentialing programs from setup through to on-event operation.
Why Sporting Events Use Oversized Cards
A standard CR80 card works well for staff identification in an office. It does not work well when a security marshal needs to read a credential across a stadium concourse, or when a venue manager needs to distinguish a media pass from a contractor pass from a VIP pass in a moving crowd.
Oversized cards solve this with surface area. Larger formats give event teams the space to show role, zone access, day and team affiliation at a size that can be verified from several metres away. Stronger visual design, clearer typography, larger photos and colour coding by credential type all become practical at the larger size, and all reduce the time it takes to verify access at a gate.
Events where oversized credentialing is now standard include:
- Olympic and Paralympic Games
- Commonwealth Games
- Grand Slam tennis events including the Australian Open
- AFL and NRL major fixtures and finals series
- Rugby Union internationals and World Cup events
- Motorsport events including Formula 1, V8 Supercars and Bathurst
- Major exhibitions, conferences and festivals operating at venue scale
In each case the credential is more than identification. It is an operational tool for managing thousands of people across multiple access zones over many days.
The Issuance Challenge: Speed Under Pressure
Most sporting events face the same problem. Credentials need to be produced quickly during peak periods, in environments where queue length directly affects event experience. Lost cards, replacement requests, late-arriving contractors and last-minute volunteer additions all create demand spikes that a slow printer cannot absorb.
For events issuing hundreds or thousands of credentials in a compressed window, printer throughput is not a secondary consideration. It is a core operational requirement.
PPC supplies two oversized printer options suited to different event scenarios.
The PPC OverSized E+ is the default choice for most oversized credentialing needs. It produces full colour, full bleed oversized credentials at up to 190 cards per hour and includes HoloKote security watermark as part of the standard print cycle, adding a tamper-evident layer without additional consumable cost.
For higher-volume environments, the Swiftcolor range uses inkjet printing optimised for plastic cards rather than dye sublimation. At larger card formats, inkjet throughput scales better than dye sublimation, and Swiftcolor can keep pace with demand that would require two or three conventional printers running in parallel.
Most events run both. The OverSized E+ handles centralised pre-event bulk production where print quality and HoloKote security are priorities. Swiftcolor handles on-event issuance points where queue speed is what matters. PPC helps event organisers work out the right split based on credential volume, issuance schedule and security requirements.
Print Quality and Card Durability
Speed matters, but so does what the credential looks like after three days of continuous use.
Oversized cards carry more visual information across a larger surface, which means any print imperfection, banding or misalignment is more visible than it would be on a standard CR80. The card also needs to hold up under lanyard wear, sun and rain exposure, repeated handling at access points, and the physical treatment that comes with multi-day event use.
Cards that fade, peel or crack by day two create operational problems and reflect poorly on the event. PPC supplies card stock matched to the event use case, including heavier-weight PVC and composite blends that resist flex, fade and edge wear. For Olympic-scale events where credentials are often kept as keepsakes, finishes that remain presentable long after the event are also available.
Olympic, Commonwealth Games and major tournament credentials are photographed extensively and appear in broadcast footage seen by millions of people. The print finish matters at that level of visibility.
Smart Card Tracking for Controlled Zones
Visual identification handles general access. For restricted zones, such as athlete-only areas, broadcast compounds, anti-doping facilities or VIP enclosures, electronic verification is required as well.
MIFARE DESFire EV3 chips embedded in the oversized card stock allow event organisers to:
- Control access to specific zones electronically through tap-on readers
- Log entry and exit times for security and incident review
- Revoke access immediately when a credential is reported lost or compromised
- Encode different zone permissions per credential without issuing multiple physical cards
- Capture attendance data that feeds into catering, transport and logistics planning
Combining an oversized printed credential with an embedded smart card chip gives organisers fast visual verification at general entry points and enforced electronic access control at high-security zones, from the same credential.
